Three reserves, one day.

From Durban exactly one Big Five safari is possible in a day: the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, around three hours to the north. If you have less time, drive 45 to 60 minutes to Tala, where you see rhinos, giraffes and hippos but no lions or elephants. The Kruger National Park and Phinda are not day trips from Durban.

Africa's oldest game park (1895), 960 km² of hilly savanna with a high rhino density; Operation Rhino to save the white rhino began here in the 1960s. Self-drivers are admitted; day tours from Durban travel by minibus or open vehicle.

Honestly: Three hours of driving each way, so a 12 to 13 hour day tour, of which around 6 hours in the park and only from 09:00, after the best morning light. Lions and leopards are not reliable in one day, and the rhinos have been dehorned since 2024.

Tala Private Game Reserve

Private reserve · 36 km² · 50 min

Around 3,600 hectares of acacia savanna, grassland and wetland near Camperdown between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Self-drivers may drive the tracks on their own, guided game drives start five times a day, and there are picnic sites and rock pools. Half a day is enough, and families with small children manage well.

Honestly: Not a Big Five reserve: no lions, no elephants, no leopards, no buffalo in the sense of a predator safari; the operator itself advertises “no large predators”. It is a fenced reserve of around 36 km² that is more game park than wilderness. Operators who combine Tala with lions additionally call at a separate lion park.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park (St. Lucia)

South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site (December 1999), 220 km of coast from Maphelane to Kosi Bay. From Durban it is usually the two-hour boat cruise on the St. Lucia estuary that is booked, often combined with a game drive in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi on the same day. The boat cruise needs no park entry; the game drive on the Eastern Shores does.

Honestly: The boat cruise shows hippos and crocodiles, not the Big Five. Combination tours with Hluhluwe on the same day mean 13 hours on the road and only two to three hours at each destination. The Eastern Shores have rhinos and buffalo but no lions.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi saved the white rhino and is home to all of the Big Five. Six hours in the park, lunch at Hilltop Camp. If you only have half a day, drive 45 minutes to Tala: rhinos, giraffes, hippos, no lions.

Tala is a Big Five reserve

Of the Big Five only the rhino lives in Tala. The operator itself advertises “no large predators” and lists rhino, kudu, hippo, giraffe and wildebeest as its animals. There are no lions, elephants, leopards or buffalo there.

Hluhluwe is an hour and a half from Durban

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife gives three hours of driving from Durban, and local operators likewise plan three hours each way. An hour and a half applies from Richards Bay or Hluhluwe village.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is malaria-free

The German Federal Foreign Office lists the park under “low risk all year round”, together with iSimangaliso. Malaria-free are the southern parts of the country, which include Durban and Tala.

Rhinos are guaranteed

The park covers 960 km² and the animals roam free. In 2024, according to the Mail & Guardian, 198 rhinos were poached there, in 2025 another 63; the populations are under pressure, and since 2024 many animals have been dehorned. High probability yes, guarantee no.

Phinda works as a day trip from Durban

Phinda lies around 350 km away and admits only overnight guests of its own lodges onto the property. Day visitors are not allowed.

With the Wild Card, iSimangaliso is free too

Ezemvelo states in its tariff brochure that the Wild Card is valid in most Ezemvelo parks but in no section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

Tala is the easiest choice for families: short drive, picnic and rock pools, game drives with no age limit, no large predators. The Hluhluwe day tour lasts 12 to 13 hours; Ezemvelo game drives are allowed from age 3, guided walks only from 12 or 13. The boat cruise in St. Lucia lasts two hours and is well suited to children.

Malaria

Durban and Tala are malaria-free. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and iSimangaliso are, according to the German Federal Foreign Office, areas with a low risk all year round: repellent, long clothing from dusk, and for pregnant women and small children seek travel-medicine advice beforehand. Day tours end before dark.

Self-drive

All three destinations can be done in a hire car. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi: 40 km/h, gravel roads, an ordinary car is enough outside the rainy season. Tala: your own routes, “remain in your vehicle” according to the operator. St. Lucia: book the boat cruise locally, the Eastern Shores can be driven yourself. The N2 north is a trunk road with lorry traffic and a few toll plazas.

Limited mobility

The boat cruise and closed minibuses are easiest for people with limited mobility; open safari vehicles have high steps. Tala has a restaurant and paved areas at reception, Hilltop Camp a restaurant and toilets. Wheelchair-accessible game drives are not advertised at any of the three destinations.

What to wear

Muted colours, hat, sun protection, and in winter (May to August) a fleece and windbreaker for morning drives in an open vehicle. On the boat in St. Lucia sun protection and a windbreaker. Sturdy shoes for picnic sites and viewpoints.

Photography

In Hluhluwe rhinos and elephants often stand close to the road; 200 to 300 mm of focal length is enough; in Tala the distances are shorter. On the boat cruise the hippos are close but usually only with their heads above water, and crocodiles lie on the bank. Day tours from Durban miss the first morning light in the park.

Budget

Cheapest is Tala by car (120 ZAR entry plus 80 ZAR vehicle). Hluhluwe in a hire car costs the conservation fee plus around 500 km of driving. Booked Hluhluwe day tours start at around 2,850 ZAR per person; combination tours with St. Lucia or a cultural village cost more.

Tips for the day

01If you only have one day and want the Big Five, take Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and accept the three-hour drive; Tala is the substitute for half days, not for lions.
02On Hluhluwe tours check the vehicle: minibus with closed windows or open safari vehicle; the latter is better for viewing and photography but cold in winter.
03Combination tours of Hluhluwe plus the St. Lucia boat cruise are popular but give only two to three hours at each destination; if you want to see animals, take the pure Hluhluwe tour.
04Self-drivers leave Durban by 05:00 at the latest so as not to lag too far behind gate opening, at 05:00 in summer and 06:00 in winter; gate times are strictly enforced.
05Tala lies on the N3 at Camperdown (exit 57), then 13 km on the R603 towards Umbumbulu; it combines well with a visit to the Valley of a Thousand Hills.
06Stay in your vehicle at Tala even though no predators live there: rhinos and hippos are the reserve's more dangerous animals.
07The Wild Card is valid in Ezemvelo parks such as Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, but not in iSimangaliso; there you pay separately at the gate.
