Booked with the operator, a full day at Aquila costs from 2,895 ZAR per adult if you drive yourself; the shared shuttle from Cape Town adds from 1,180 ZAR, and an agency rate sheet quotes 4,075 ZAR all in (Nov 2025 to Apr 2026). Half-day programmes start at 1,185 ZAR (sunset) and 2,365 ZAR (afternoon). Inverdoorn last sold its day package at 4,950 ZAR including transfer. Children aged 4 to 11 pay half at Aquila.

With pickup between 05:45 and 06:45, around 2.5 hours of driving each way and departure from the reserve at 16:30, Aquila comes to about 12 to 13 hours door to door. The game drive itself lasts 2 to 3 hours. At Inverdoorn the return drive leaves at 15:00; the day is similarly long.

Elephants, rhinos, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, antelope and ostriches are seen regularly at Aquila and Inverdoorn, the lions in their enclosure area. Leopards in all three reserves are free-roaming Cape leopards and are practically never seen. The operator guarantees no sightings.

Yes. Aquila takes children of any age and charges nothing up to 3 and half price from 4 to 11. Quad, horseback and combo safaris are only possible from 16. Parents should consider the long day of driving; the afternoon programme with pickup from 08:15 is often the better choice for small children.

To Aquila, yes: all day programmes can be booked with self-drive arrival, the route runs around 130 km along the N1 to the R46 exit near Touws River, 170 km in total from Cape Town. Without a confirmed booking there is no entry. On Inverdoorn's day programme self-drivers are not admitted. Inside the reserve you always ride in the operator's vehicle.

Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are mild and dry. In winter from June to August Cape Town gets the most rain and the open vehicle is cold at 8 to 18 °C, but flights and hotels are cheaper. In high summer the Karoo gets hot at midday; then the early programme from 07:00 is worth it. Because the reserves are fenced, sightings are similar all year.

Both are 10,000 hectares, malaria-free, belong to the same operator group and list the Big Five. Aquila is closer at just under 2 hours, bookable daily all year with several programmes, and correspondingly busier. Inverdoorn is around 2.5 hours away, limits its day package to 20 guests, has a cheetah project and has so far offered day trips only in the southern summer. If you want quiet and travel in season, take Inverdoorn; if you need flexibility, Aquila.

Neither. The reserves are fenced private properties of 10,000 hectares on which elephants, rhinos, buffalo and antelope roam freely; the lions, however, live in enclosures of their own, and visitor reports describe supplementary feeding and large vehicles. If you want a safari with free-hunting predators, you have to stay overnight from Cape Town, for instance at Sanbona (3.5 hours, 62,000 hectares) or Gondwana (4 hours).

No. The Western Cape is among the southern parts of the country that the German Federal Foreign Office classes as malaria-free; the risk areas are the north-east with the Kruger Park and parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Inverdoorn and Sanbona confirm this for the Karoo.

No. Sanbona states in its FAQ that it offers no day visits and lies around 3.5 hours from Cape Town; Gondwana near Mossel Bay is 4 hours away. Both are overnight destinations with two or more nights.
